Through The Binocs

Drawing Away Stables’ Saginaw took charge on the far turn and drew away to win the $90,000, Carr Heaven Stakes for New York-breds by three lengths over Johannesburg Smile. Claimed for $30,000 on March 8, this was the third victory in as many starts since being claimed by trainer David Jacobson. It was also the third consecutive victory of the day for Drawing Away Stables and Jacobson, having won the second race with Alarmist and the third with Charlestonian. It was also the third winner of the day for jockey David Cohen, who won the first race with Readytodefer and the second race.

SEVENTH RACE: While favoritism in the race at post time belonged to Debase the Dollar, the second choice at 3-1 was the well bred first-time starter Antonia Autumn. A half sister to multiple Eclipse Award winner Gio Ponti, she is also trained by Christophe Clement and was being ridden by Gio Ponti’s regular jock Ramon Dominguez. She rated off the pace for most of the race but when turning for home, without much urging, Antonia Autumn just exploded and split horses to gain the lead and easily hold off Debase the Dollar for the victory. She definitely has a bright future ahead of her.

TENTH RACE: Chubbalita’s Joy missed the break and spotted the field a few lengths. Then newly arrived apprentice Armando Ayuso rushed the John Quiles trainee into the middle of the field but then got himself into a jam alongside favored Dita. She then stumbled and sent Ayuso face first into the turf course. Chubbalita’s Story was then running loose in the field and Dominguez aboard Rennina noticed the loose horse on the far turn. Turning for home, Dominguez reached over to attempt to grab Chubbalita’s Story’s reins and try to control the loose horse from causing any traffic trouble with the rest of the field during the race. Meanwhile, Rough Winter, with Ariel Smith picking up the mount for C.C. Lopez, was able to catch Believe in Betty right before the wire to gain the victory.

Fans show our culture is in tank

headshotPhil Mushnick

From Philly to L.A., our sports “culture” was on full review this week.

The Flyers were three goals up and minutes away from eliminating the Penguins last Sunday when, instead of a congratulatory chant of something like, “Let’s go Flyers,” the crowd chanted an obscenity toward Sidney Crosby.

In L.A., after the Artist Formerly Known As Ron Artest assaulted the Thunder’s James Harden with an atomic elbow, Artest, ejected, was cheered as he headed to the locker room — and to his third suspension of seven or more games.

Still, pandering to the bad acts is a specialty of modern society. Last May, days after the NBA bestowed an award for citizenship on Artest — apparently not being fined or suspended for a few minutes is deserving of a lollipop — he was suspended for a playoff game for clotheslining the Mavericks’ J.J. Barea.

PEACE MAKER? Fans cheer Lakers star Metta World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest, after he was ejected, and later suspended seven games, after throwing an elbow to the head of Oklahoma City’s James Harden.

Hey, remember what those champs at Nike chose as its Olympic ad campaign: “You don’t win silver, you lose gold.”

More: Seeing how Fordham University has become noted for future sportscasters and newscasters, the school asked two professors to check in on ESPN Radio’s move to KISS 98.7 FM, which included R&B music.

Dr. Paul Levinson, professor of communications and media studies:

“The purchase [actually, the rental] of KISS by ESPN is indicative of the general shift of music listening from radio to the Web, which has been going on for more than a decade, but is still accelerating with iPhones and iPads as music-listening devices. Sports on the other hand, still has a powerful voice via radio.”

Dr. Mark Naison, professor of African-American studies, sees it far differently: “By contrast, I would say the generation of black people who listen to KISS-FM are dying off rapidly as a result of stress-induced illnesses that result from living in a racist (but post-racial) society.”

Really? Geez.

No mention from Dr. Naison, however, that this sustaining racism will allow ESPN 1050-AM to become New York’s first Spanish-language sports station.

And more: Good chat Wednesday between Howie Rose and Josh Lewin during Mets-Marlins on WFAN.

Rose noted that Marlin Logan Morrison was wearing No. 5, originally retired by the Marlins as a memorial to Carl Barger, the first president of the team who died suddenly few months before the Marlins played their first game in 1993.

The No. 5 was chosen, said Rose, because Joe DiMaggio had been Barger’s favorite. Unretiring that number, Rose said, “Rubs me the wrong way.”

Lewin agreed, saying it reminded him of when the Padres renamed Jack Murphy Stadium Qualcomm Stadium. Murphy, the brother of the late Mets broadcaster Bob Murphy, was a San Diego columnist who worked to have a big league team in town.

Twisted logic on economy

headshotJohn Crudele

Dear John...THE ANSWER MAN

Dear John: I am not a Bernanke or Obama supporter. But something good could come out of driving down the long-term Treasury interest rates without printing money.

Most mortgages and many loans are based on the long-term Treasury rates. It could mean a big difference to people looking to buy a new home or to people looking to keep the one they have, if they can refinance in this disastrous job market. Just a thought. F.M.

Dear F.M. You are referring to the most recent brain freeze of the Federal Reserve, which was called Operation Twist, or just plain Twist, or Twizzler or something like that.

The Fed sold short-term government securities and used the proceeds to buy long-term bonds. The idea was to make long-term rates lower and allow short rates to rise.

Mortgage rates are already near 4 percent on a 30-year loan. Could another 0.25 percentage points or so matter?

Sure, some people might be inspired to buy a house if Operation Twist sent mortgage rates lower. But the real-estate market isn’t going anywhere until jobs are created and people feel more secure about taking on 30 years of debt.

Mortgage rates are already super-attractive.

On the negative side, there are investors who count on the slightly higher yields they receive on long-term — rather than short-term — government bonds. So you help the people who might use the lower rate to buy a house, and you hurt savers — again.

You also mention “without printing money.” You are referring to the Fed’s Quantitative Easing (QE) programs.

I think that just about anything is better than the QE programs.

Dear John: I read elsewhere that if you factor out the Birth/Death Model calculation from the last employment report, the actual count of new jobs in March would have been only 30,000, not the 120,000 the Labor Department reported.

Could you please comment? J.P.

Dear J.P. Elsewhere is wrong.

As all my readers know already, the Birth/Death Model is an estimate of jobs being created by newly formed companies, which the government assumes — but can’t prove — exist. Because they are new, the Labor Department can’t phone them for its monthly survey.

So the computers say a certain number of new companies should be forming in a springtime economy, and the Labor Department goes with the guess.

Yes, the government reported 120,000 new jobs in March. And, yes, the Birth/Death Model added a 90,000 estimate to the count.

So “elsewhere” thinks you simply subtract that 90,000 from the seasonally adjusted 120,000 and get the real job growth of 30,000.

That’s not how it works.

The 90,000 guesstimate is actually added to the unadjusted figure, which showed growth of 811,000 jobs in March. So the Birth/Death calculation last month wasn’t nearly as big a percentage of the total gain as some people think.

But that doesn’t mean that the Birth/Death Model should be ignored. In fact, over the next few months the guesstimates should be around 172,000 for April, 211,000 for May and 141,000 for June. Those are the numbers used last year for those months.

So the Birth/Death Model could influence the headline seasonally adjusted figure that we all watch and to which the financial markets react.

NFL: Loomis has clear conscience

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said he’s “angry” about allegations that his Superdome booth was wired so he could eavesdrop on opposing coaches’ radio conversations. Loomis said he has a clear conscience and welcomes a joint investigation by Louisiana state police and the FBI.

Loomis also said he understands Drew Brees’ next contract will be the most important one he has ever done and he pledges it will eventually get done. He said the Saints must find a balance between making the star quarterback happy and keeping the whole team competitive.

The Steelers agreed to a one-year deal with veteran backup quarterback Byron Leftwich, who missed all of last season with a broken left arm.

Crawford received a Platelet Rich Plasma injection and will be shut down from baseball activity “during the initial phase of his treatment.”

In Chicago, Kevin Youkilis hit a grand slam, Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered twice and the Red Sox roughed up Philip Humber, who was making his first start since pitching a perfect game on Saturday. in a 10-3 victory over the White Sox.

Big Blue snags Va. Tech RB Wilson in first round

In the end, the last pick of the first round of the NFL Draft was “a pretty pick for us,’’ according to general manager Jerry Reese.

“Very easy,’’ echoed Marc Ross, the Giants director of college scouting.

Why not? The Giants won the Super Bowl based on a ferocious pass rush and a dynamic passing game, and left behind their usually productive running game. They made a move last night to rectify finishing last in the NFL in rushing, taking Virginia Tech running back David Wilson with the 32nd overall pick.

“He’s a terrific football player,’’ Reese said. “This guy loves to play football. He can do anything you want him to do. He’s a good piece to add to our running back stable.’’

WHAT A RUSH! The Giants selected Virginia Tech running back David Wilson with the 32nd pick in the first round of last night’s NFL Draft.

WHAT A RUSH! The Giants selected Virginia Tech running back David Wilson with the 32nd pick in the first round of last night’s NFL Draft.

This was a marriage of need and value. The Giants released Brandon Jacobs — who averaged 150 rushing attempts the past two years — and the starting running back, Ahmad Bradshaw, has chronically bad feet that forced him to miss four games last season and prevented him from practicing for the majority of the season.

What was left on the roster — D.J. Ware, Da’Rel Scott and Andre Brown — did not inspire much confidence. Hence, the selection of Wilson, who came out of college after his junior year and last season ran for 1,709 yards and nine touchdowns to earn ACC Player of the Year honors.

“He’s the kind of a guy who will add very much to our present situation in terms of the big play-potential,’’ coach Tom Coughlin said. “He’s one of those guys who has the speed and the maneuverability to make the big play.’’

The Buccaneers traded up to No. 31 in order to take Boise State running back Doug Martin, most likely fearing the Giants would take him at No. 32. Reese, though, said Wilson was the Giants’ second-highest rated running back on the road, behind only Alabama’s Trent Richardson. Reese did take nearly all of the allotted 10 minutes to make the pick, though, willing to trade down for the right price.

“We wanted to stay on the clock and make sure nobody wanted to move up and give us a mother lode,’’ Reese said.

Coughlin said one of the reasons Wilson is an important addition is because of Bradshaw’s history of foot problems.

“You have to think of that,’’ Coughlin said. “If it becomes an issue again you have to have some outstanding, talented people to pick up the slack a little bit.’’

Wilson is not tall — he’s 5-9. But he is extremely fast — he ran a 4.41. He also is a kickoff returner and Reese called his balance “incredible.’’

He has had a problem with fumbles in his career — seven last year — because of what Coughlin described as “flamboyant all over the place stuff’’ but added “he just has to learn.’’

Wilson is the first running back taken by the Giants in the first round since 2000, when they took the Heisman Trophy winner, Ron Dayne.

Wilson this week posted a video on Youtube playfully calling out Jason Pierre-Paul, challenging him to a back-flip contest, calling himself “the best acrobat in the NFL.’’

Reese said Wilson is “wound tight’’ and Ross described him as “a live-wire, energetic, personable.’’

Wilson said he was thrilled to be coming to the Super Bowl champions.

“I’m a good team player,” he said. “In this league one running back can’t do it all. I look forward to working with those guys.’’

The Giants were happy with the direction the first round took, leaving several quality prospects on the board when it came time for their selection. They had their pick of tight end Coby Fleener, offensive lineman Cordy Glenn, receivers Rueben Randle and Stephen Hill, defensive lineman Jerel Worthy and linebacker Courtney Upshaw.

Bookstore gets cover

Barnes & Noble Inc. gained the most in 11 months after Jana Partners LLC, a hedge fund that has pushed for companies to sell off assets, disclosed a 12 percent stake in the largest US bookstore chain.

The New York-based retailer rose 18 percent to $13.41 at the close in New York for the largest gain since May 20. The shares have declined 7.4 percent this year.

Barnes & Noble is considering separating its growing Nook digital unit into a separate company so investors will give it the higher valuation of a technology business. In March the company hired a new chief financial officer, Michael Huseby.

CVR Energy allows Icahn to move forward with tender offer

SUGAR LAND, Texas — Oil refiner CVR Energy Inc. has signed a deal with billionaire investor Carl Icahn that would allow him to complete his $30 per share tender offer.

Icahn said earlier this month that investors owning 55 percent of the company's shares outstanding had accepted his bid, but he couldn't actually buy the stock until CVR's board removed a "poison pill" rule preventing a sale of the company.

Icahn wants to take control of CVR and then sell the Sugar Land, Texas, company. He is offering $2.26 billion for the shares he doesn't already own, valuing CVR at about $2.6 billion.

CVR says Thursday that it initiated talks with Icahn because of the support investors had shown for his bid, but it still believes CVR is worth more than $30 per share.

U.S. Stocks Slide

Stocks fell after a trio of disappointing economic readings overshadowed better-than-expected earnings reports from Travelers and other companies.

Stocks were little changed as a handful of upbeat earnings reports offset disappointing readings on the domestic jobs and housing markets. Chris Dietrich has details on The News Hub. Photo: AP.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 68.65 points, or 0.53%, to 12964.10. The Standard Poor's 500-stock index shed 8.22 points, or 0.59%, to 1376.92, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 23.89 points, or 0.79% to 3007.56.

The information-technology and industrials sectors led the S&P 500 lower amid downbeat labor, housing and manufacturing readings.

Just three of the Dow's 30 components advanced. Travelers gained $2.23, or 3.7%, to $61.70 and Verizon Communications rose 49 cents, or 1.3%, to 38.15 after both reported first-quarter results that beat analysts' projections. General Electric gained four cents, or 0.2%, to 19.14 ahead of its results Friday.

"This whole market ran out of steam halfway through the day," said Jonathan Corpina, senior managing partner of New York Stock Exchange floor broker Meridian Equity Partners. "It just seems to be getting worse and worse as the day goes on. All the European headlines are really catching up right now."

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits was higher than expected, a sign of lost momentum in the labor market. Mid-Atlantic manufacturers saw business conditions this month decline more than anticipated. Sales of previously owned homes in the U.S. fell in March for the second consecutive month and missed expectations. But the index of leading economic indicators in March posted the sixth increase in a row and edged out economists' forecasts.

The Federal Reserve said banks will have two years to bring their activities in line with the "Volcker rule" before regulators start enforcing it. The formal statement was aimed at calming bank fears that they would be forced to act before a July deadline.

European markets declined, with the Stoxx Europe 600 falling 0.5%. Spain's IBEX 35 slumped 2.4% to close at a three-year low. Spain sold €2.54 billion ($3.3 billion) of two- and 10-year bonds, just above the upper end of the range the government had targeted, but the yield on the 10-year bond came in higher than at the previous auction.

Some investors said they were relieved the Spanish auction didn't turn out worse.

"In general, I think there was fear of the Spanish bond auction this morning," said Gary Flam, portfolio manager at Bel Air Investment Advisors in Los Angeles. "So when it came in, it may have been better than feared" in U.S. investors' minds.

Most Asian markets fell. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average shed 0.8% and China's Shanghai Composite slipped 0.1%.

Crude-oil prices fell 0.4%, to settle at $102.27 a barrel, while gold prices gained 0.1%, to settle at $1,640.60 a troy ounce. The dollar gained ground against the yen but fell versus the euro.

Other companies reporting earnings included eBay, which saw shares jump 4.75, or 13%, to 40.62, the biggest percentage increase among S&P 500 components. The online auctioneer posted better-than-expected first-quarter results.

Qualcomm slid 4.42, or 6.6%, to 62.56 after the mobile chip maker reported fiscal second-quarter results that exceeded expectations, but provided a third-quarter earnings outlook that was below projections.

Apple fell 20.90, or 3.4%, to 587.44 amid concerns of potential component shortages and slowing iPhone sales based on comments in Qualcomm and Verizon's results.

Bank of America dropped 15 cents, or 1.7%, to 8.77 after reporting its core operations muddled along in the first quarter as strong capital-market performance offset declining consumer-banking results. The bank's profits fell sharply due to a large accounting charge tied to the value of its own debt.

Morgan Stanley advanced 41 cents, or 2.3%, to 18.07 after the investment bank posted adjusted first-quarter earnings, after excluding charges related to the valuation of debt, and revenue that was well above expectations.

In other corporate news, Human Genome Sciences soared 7.00, or 98%, to 14.17 after the company said it rejected an unsolicited buyout bid from the U.K.'s GlaxoSmithKline, saying the offer was too low.

CVR Energy climbed 2.29, or 8.2%, to 30.16 after striking a deal that will see activist investor Carl Icahn push ahead with his hostile bid for the petroleum company.

Gilead Sciences rose 5.64, or 12%, to 52.25 as a study showed experimental drugs from the company and Bristol-Myers Squibb suppressed hepatitis C in most patients four weeks after completing treatment.

Luxury luggage and briefcase maker Tumi Holdings jumped 8.50, or 47%, to 26.50 after its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. Tumi's debut priced at $18, above its expected range

Data analysis software company Splunk surged 18.48, or 109%, to 35.48 after its IPO on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The stock priced at $17, well above its expected range of $11 to $13. The debut encountered some technical difficulties on NYSE Arca soon after Splunk opened, which led to a brief halt and the cancellation of some trades.

Red Sox respond to Bobby V comments

Bobby Valentine didn’t take long to stir the pot in his new clubhouse.

After questioning Kevin Youkilis’ commitment in a television interview Sunday, the Red Sox manager apologized to the third baseman yesterday — but not before upsetting several of his players.

“I really don’t know what Bobby is trying to do,” Dustin Pedroia said yesterday. “That’s not the way we go about our stuff around here. He’ll figure that out. The whole team is behind [Youkilis]. We have each other’s backs here.”

As for the possibility Valentine was trying to motivate the struggling Youkilis, Pedroia wasn’t buying it: “Maybe that works in Japan.”

SQUAWKY WAY: Never-shy Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine (inset) yesterday apologized for inflammatory comments about fan favorite Kevin Youkilis, who sat out a 1-0 loss to the Rays.

Bobby Valentine

Getty Images

Bobby Valentine

Valentine found success in Japan after he left the majors, where he had not managed since leaving the Mets following the 2002 season before being hired by the Red Sox in December.

But Valentine insisted he was not trying to get Youkilis going when he told WHDH-TV he didn’t think the famously intense Youkilis was “as physically or emotionally into the game for some reason.”

Youkilis, who missed yesterday’s 1-0 Patriots Day loss to the Rays with a sore groin, said he was “more confused than anything [about the comments]. Everybody knows I go out and play the game as hard as I can.”

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Red Sox, who host the Yankees for three games in the rivals’ first series of the season starting Friday.

Valentine yesterday said he regretted his choice of words.

“I should have been more specific,” Valentine said yesterday. “ ‘Physical’ is about your swing, ‘emotional’ is about not being happy when he doesn’t hit a ball off the wall. ... I don’t know if he accepted my apology. It was sincere.”

The manager also spoke to Pedroia.

“Yeah, everything’s fine,” the second baseman said after the loss. “We talked about it. We’re good.”

General manager Ben Cherington, who took over for Theo Epstein and was reported not to be Valentine’s strongest advocate in Boston’s managerial search, said he hopes the air was cleared.

“Kevin and Bobby spoke, I spoke to Kevin, I spoke to Bobby, and there were other conversations,” Cherington said. “I think what needed to be said has been said and we’ll go forward.”

Still, the controversy provided fodder for those who expected the controversial Valentine to make waves after he took over for Terry Francona.

Valentine’s recent comments were reminiscent of some he made when he was with the Mets, especially in his first full season at Shea in 1997 when he knocked Todd Hundley for not getting enough sleep. That was interpreted as Valentine’s way of criticizing the catcher for going out too much.

Youkilis is hitting just .200 with no homers and three RBIs in eight games in the wake of a season in which he hit a career-low .258 in 120 games.

“I go out and just play the game,” Youkilis said. “It doesn’t matter one way or another. There’s things that happened over the years with a lot of different things in baseball. For me, it’s not an issue.”

Valentine said he also thought the issue was overblown.

“I’d be surprised if Kevin didn’t know I was totally behind him,” he said. “We’re big boys. I think he’ll get it. If not, I’ll talk to him a lot more.”

For better or worse.

Final Kentucky Derby preps impressive

Talk about saving the best for last. Saturday’s final Grade 1 preps for the May 5 Kentucky Derby, now just 19 days away, produced two of the season’s most impressive efforts by Triple Crown-bound 3-year-olds when Dullahan came home like a locomotive under Kent Desormeaux to win the $750,000 Blue Grass at Keeneland by 1 1/4 lengths, and a half-hour later at Oaklawn Park, Bodemeister led all the way under new rider Mike Smith to take the $1 million Arkansas Derby by an astounding 9 1/2 lengths.

Their final times for the 1 1/8 miles — 1:47.94 over the Polytrack at Keeneland, 1:48.71 on dirt at Oaklawn — were solid.

Dullahan and Bodemeister, trained by Triple Crown veterans Dale Romans and Bob Baffert, respectively, now figure prominently in the jumble of seven or eight top contenders for the 138th Run for the Roses that figure to attract the bulk of the bettors’ attention. Churchill Downs line-maker Mike Battaglia said Saturday he might peg the morning-line favorite — and there are three or four candidates for that role — at 5-1 or 6-1.

Dullahan, whose training was briefly interrupted twice by minor setbacks this winter and spring, was making his second start of the year in the Blue Grass after rallying for second in the Palm Beach on turf. After that race, Desormeaux said: “We loomed large around the far turn, but the winner possessed another gear. I’ll possess that gear next time.”

Did he ever. As 2-year-old champion Hansen, favored at 6-5, shook loose on the lead under Ramon Dominguez through a quick fractions (:23.10, :46.64, 1:11.32), Dullahan, second choice at 3-1, settled near the back of the 13-horse field. He rallied inside around the far turn, swung off the rail to split horses at the top of the stretch, took a while to find his best stride under Desormeaux’s vigorous whip, then got a grip on the track and stormed past Hansen in the final furlong.

“He switched leads and just exploded,” Desormeaux said. “As soon as he straightened (into the stretch), there was a hole. He ran through that and then he said, ‘Now what do I do?’ I asked him to keep going. He was very strong all the way to the wire.”

Hansen, who settled off the pace to win the Gotham, reverted to his former style, blazing away on the front end.

“The pace was too fast,” trainer Mike Maker said. “It was quicker than we wanted. But he was fresh today. The next one (the Derby) is the big one.”

Maker and the colt’s namesake owner, Dr. Kendall Hansen, had a bit of a contretemps earlier in the day after the daffy doctor dyed Hansen’s tail blue (something he threatened to do before the Gotham). The Keeneland stewards took a dim view, and the tail had to be washed out to its natural white in the hours before the race.

Some observers felt Hansen was on-edge before the race, that being the reason why he went too fast, too soon. Was “Tailgate” the cause?

Bodemeister, a son of Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker, was making just his fourth start in the Arkansas Derby, coming off a close second in the San Felipe to Creative Cause (who subsequently was beaten a nose by I’ll Have Another in the Santa Anita Derby).

Favored at 2-1, with stablemate Secret Circle the 5-2 second choice, Bodemeister gunned to the front from his far outside post 11 and shook loose through a fast pace (:23.02, :46.55, 1:11.36). Off those splits, it seemed likely that Bodemeister would come back to the field. He did just the opposite, sprinting away when Smith set him down at the top of the stretch.

Secret Circle, coming off wins in the Southwest and Rebel at Oaklawn, held second over Delta Downs Jackpot winner Sabercat, both of which will also head to the Derby.

The big question mark about Bodemeister is his inexperience. He did not make his first start until Jan. 16, and no horse that did not race as a 2-year-old has won the Derby since Apollo in 1882.

As for Dullahan, both of his career wins — the Blue Grass and last year’s Breeders’ Futurity — came over the Polytrack surface at Keeneland. A son of Even the Score (by Unbridled’s Song), he is a half-brother to Mine That Bird, who won the 2009 Derby in the slop, but whose only other wins came on Polytrack at Woodbine.

Flyers shove Penguins to brink

Fists were flying faster than shots on goal. Sidney Crosby and Claude Giroux even became knotted in the pushing, pulling and shoving, a pair of superstars willing to mix it up to prove which team was the baddest.

The Penguins and Flyers talked trash, laid the smack down, and played one wildly entertaining game. The result was still the same.

The Flyers rallied from another early deficit for a decisive Game 3 victory that placed them on the brink of an improbable sweep.

Danny Briere, Matt Read and Max Talbot each scored two goals to lead the Flyers to an 8-4 victory over the Penguins yesterday in a fight-filled game in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal in Philadelphia.

Giroux and Wayne Simmonds also scored to help the Flyers take a 3-0 lead in the combustible series. Game 4 is Wednesday night. The Flyers scored 20 goals in the first three games.

“Our goal is to finish it right away,” Briere said.

This one was all about the brawls more suitable for a UFC card. Three players were tossed in the first period. By the end, Flyers fans serenaded the Penguins with booming chants of “You can’t beat us!”

Jordan Staal and James Neal scored twice for the Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury was benched after allowing six goals in two periods.

Kings 1, Canucks 0

In Los Angeles, Jonathan Quick made 41 saves, Dustin Brown scored on a long rebound with 13:30 to play, and the eighth-seeded Kings pushed Vancouver to the brink of elimination.

Brown’s fourth goal of a stellar series put the Kings one win away from their first playoff series victory since 2001. He also put the two-time Presidents’ Trophy-winning Canucks on the edge of a shocking playoff departure. Game 4 is Wednesday night.

Predators 3, Red Wings 2

In Detroit, Shea Weber turned boos into silence with a goal early in the first period and the Predators held on to beat the Red Wings to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Talbots fourth-quarter loss widens on higher charges

HINGHAM, Mass. — Talbots Inc.'s fiscal fourth-quarter loss widened on higher charges as the women's clothing chain took aggressive markdowns and promotions during the period. It provided a first-quarter revenue forecast below Wall Street's expectations.

Talbots also said late Thursday that it continues to explore its strategic options after rejecting an approximately $205.2 million buyout bid in December from a private equity firm that is its biggest shareholder.

The company said it is also continuing with its search for a new president and CEO. Current President and CEO Trudy Sullivan plans to retire as soon as a successor is named.

Its shares fell 11 cents, or 3.5 percent, to $3.02 in premarket trading.

Talbots reported a net loss of $53.3 million, or 77 cents per share, for the period ended Jan. 28, versus a loss of $2.8 million, or 4 cents per share, a year ago.

Taking out restructuring and impairment charges and other items, the company's adjusted loss from continuing operations was 52 cents per share.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet predicted a loss of 51 cents per share.

Restructuring and impairment charges both climbed from the prior-year period and selling, general and administrative expenses also grew.

Revenue dipped 1 percent to $289.4 million from $292.6 million, but beat Wall Street's estimate of $267.9 million.

Consolidated comparable sales, which includes stores, online, catalog and red-line sales, were essentially flat with a year ago. The metric excludes stores closed or set to be closed under Talbots' store rationalization plan.

Consolidated comparable sales rose 1.6 percent in December and 3.2 percent in January.

Fourth-quarter comparable store sales, which excludes stores closed or those set to close under the store rationalization plan, rose 1.9 percent.

Talbots said that it closed 47 locations under its rationalization plan during the quarter. It anticipates closing about 110 locations in total, which includes the consolidation of 15 to 20 locations, through fiscal 2013. As of the end of the fourth quarter, it operated 517 Talbots stores in 46 states and Canada.

For the year, Talbots lost $111.9 million, or $1.62 per share. In the previous year it earned $10.8 million, or 16 cents per share. Annual revenue dropped 6 percent to $1.14 billion from $1.21 billion.

Consolidated comparable sales slipped 5.6 percent, while comparable store sales dropped 5 percent.

The retailer anticipates first-quarter revenue of about $272 million. Analysts predict $282.9 million in revenue.

Talbots said its board is looking at a full range of strategic options to maximize shareholder value and will continue to pursue its long-range plan while its evaluation occurs. It has no specific date for when its evaluation will be finished.

Talbots had rejected a takeover offer from its biggest shareholder, private equity firm Sycamore Partners, in December. At that time Talbots said that the bid of $3 per share undervalued the Hingham, Mass. company. Sycamore already has a 9.9 percent stake in Talbots. The $205.2 million value of the buyout excludes the shares Sycamore already holds.

Thorn: Knicks are ‘dangerous’ team

PHILADELPHIA — In his 10 years as general manager and president of the Nets, Rod Thorn was in a daily war with the Knicks. Area rivalry and all that. So he escaped down the New Jersey Turnpike to the 76ers but still finds himself battling the same old foe.

“Isn’t that amazing? It really is. Moved down the Turnpike but we’re still fighting them,” Thorn said with a laugh yesterday.

Thorn readily admits the Knicks are not a team he wants to go to war with because they are, in a word, dangerous.

“Really dangerous,” Thorn said. “They’ve got a guy to protect the rim in [Tyson] Chandler. [Carmelo] Anthony’s playing at the top of his game right now. He’s engaged. The [Iman] Shumpert kid has done a great job for them. He’s going to be a real good player. They’ve got guys coming in who can score. They’re dangerous any given night.”

The 76ers, who not too long ago looked like a stone-cold playoff lock, are holding down the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference, one game ahead of the Knicks. Philadelphia has eight games left, starting with the Nets tonight, but the 76ers close out the season with five on the road.

“The last month, we’ve had a struggle. We played really well early and then we didn’t, so we brought everybody back into the picture,” said Thorn, referring to coach Doug Collins’ lineup shakeup two games ago — a move that has resulted in 107 bench points in two wins. “We’re in a fight with the Knicks and Milwaukee.”

What went wrong?

“We haven’t shot the ball,” he said. “We’re first or second in defense, but we just don’t make enough shots some nights. Our bench was really great most of the year and then they dropped off. [Lou] Williams and [Thaddeus] Young weren’t playing as well and we had been like second in the league in bench scoring for most of the year. Last couple games they’ve come back and when those guys are going good, that’s when we’re good.”

Arkansas fires Petrino after affair, motorcycle accident

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas fired coach Bobby Petrino yesterday and then scathingly dressed him down for unfairly hiring his mistress and intentionally misleading his boss about everything from their relationship to her presence at the motorcycle accident that ultimately cost him his job.

Athletic director Jeff Long announced his decision at an evening news conference and laid out a stunning laundry list of misdeeds against the man he hired away from the Falcons four years ago.

They included ignoring multiple chances over the past 10 days to come clean to Long about a relationship that had crossed the line from infidelity into workplace favoritism.

SEE YA! Arkansas fired Bobby Petrino (above) as its football coach yesterday for unfairly hiring his mistress Jessica Dorrell and intentionally misleading his boss about her presence in a motorcycle accident.

“He made the decision a conscious decision to mislead the public on Tuesday, and in doing so negatively and adversely affected the reputation of the University of Arkansas and our football program,” Long said, choking up at one point as he discussed telling players that their coach was gone. “In short, coach Petrino engaged in a pattern of misleading and manipulative behavior designed to deceive me and members of the athletic staff, both before and after the motorcycle accident.”

The 51-year-old Petrino, a married father of four, had maintained an inappropriate relationship with 25-year-old Jessica Dorrell for a “significant” amount of time and at one point had given her $20,000, Long said.

He would not disclose details of the payment, or when the money changed hands, but said both parties confirmed the “gift.” Kevin Trainor, a spokesman for Long, said the money came from Petrino, not university funds.

Petrino, who was fired via a letter from Long, issued a lengthy apology and said he was focused on trying to heal his family.

“All I have been able to think about is the number of people I’ve let down by making selfish decisions,” he said. “I chose to engage in an improper relationship. I also made several poor decisions following the end of that relationship and in the aftermath of the accident. I accept full responsibility for what has happened.”

Dorrell, a former Razorbacks volleyball player, worked for the Razorbacks Foundation before she was hired by Petrino on March 28, four days before their accident on a winding rural road. Long said she was one of three finalists out of 159 applicants and got the job after a time frame he said was shorter than usual.

Petrino never disclosed his conflict of interest in hiring Dorrell or the payment, Long said.

“Coach Petrino abused his authority when over the past few weeks he made a staff decision and personal choices that benefited himself and jeopardized the integrity of the football program,” Long said.

As Street Idles, Jobs Report Revs Traders' Engines

Disappointing jobs data landed with a thud Friday. The only good news: Wall Street was empty.

A strange day in the markets: stocks closed; bond-trading hours shortened, forex markets thin. And yet the disappointing job report focused the attention. Steve Russolillo has details on The News Hub. Photo: Getty Images

The government said the economy added just 120,000 jobs in March, well short of expectations. Ordinarily, the news would have reverberated around the Street, roiling markets.

Instead, many trading desks were deserted as traders and clients took a day off for Good Friday. Stock and commodity markets were closed.

Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners, was shopping at Home Depot in Fairfield, Conn., when the news hit; Rick Bensignor, chief market strategist at Merlin Securities, a New York brokerage firm, was at home fiddling with his new iPad; and Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott, was catching up on his newspaper reading on his couch in Pittsburgh.

"I knew there was nothing I could do about it, so I looked at the numbers when I got free," said Mr. Pavlik, who spent the rest of the morning washing his deck. "There's no way for us to react, so I'm not freaking out about it. I'll deal with it come Sunday night."

But for those in the bond and currency markets, it was all hands on deck. Many bond-trading desks were close to fully stafFed, as fixed-income markets were open until noon EDT. Currency markets also were trading. Stock futures traded for a few hours.

Heard on the Street: An Easier Jobs Report for the Fed

Treasurys jumped, the dollar fell and stock futures dropped 1%, suggesting the Dow Jones Industrial Average may fall on Monday. The news came after the stock market's worst week this year, in large part sparked by worries that the Federal Reserve may be less eager to start a new round of financial stimulus.

Many viewed the jobs report as a signal the Fed now may be more likely to start a third round of bond buying, or quantitative easing, known in the market as QE3. Added stimulus likely would put more dollars into the financial system, reducing the value of the greenback. Fed buying of bonds can also help send prices higher.

The yield on the 10-year note, which was hovering at about 2.20% before the release of the report, plummeted to about 2.07% in a matter of minutes. Yields, which move in the opposite direction to prices, continued to move lower, ending the day at 2.056%, compared with 2.173% late Thursday.

"I think it brings up the QE3 question again, but one data point will not be enough to convince the Fed about the need for further easing," said Priya Misra, head of U.S. rates strategy research at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in New York.

The report created an unexpected flurry of activity on both sides of the Atlantic, putting extra strains on desks in Europe, where staffing was particularly low. Stock markets in Europe also were closed.

"In the hour after the jobs report, the amount of trades conducted by the one woman in our London office probably matched the number done by our 14 salespeople here" in Stamford, Conn., said Bob Sinche, global head of currency strategy for RBS Securities. Volumes in bond, currency and futures markets jumped but soon subsided, traders said.

"Nonfarm payrolls is the pinnacle gambling table at the casino," said David Gilmore, partner and analyst at Foreign Exchange Analytics in Essex, Conn. Mr. Gilmore said he was at his desk as usual at 5 a.m.

As for the likely reaction when firms are back to full power on Monday, many traders were mixed.

Mr. Bensignor said he expects markets to continue selling off on Monday and remained skeptical that the jobs number would change the thinking at the Fed.

"At this point, with what the Fed has said, I don't think one month's jobs number is going to change their mind. Their statement made it clear that things would have to get quite a bit worse for them to act," he said.

Others said the effect may wear off over the weekend. And the improved prospects for QE3, albeit slight, actually may help the stock market.

Can the stock market sustain its gains, or are investors facing a pullback? We'll discuss the outlook for the financial markets with Russell Investments Chief Market Strategist Stephen Wood on The News Hub. Photo: Brendan McDermid/Reuters

"Markets will obviously be impacted by the bad jobs number, but it ultimately lays the groundwork for more easing, and that's good for stocks," said Michael Yoshikami, chief executive of San Francisco-based Destination Wealth Management, which manages $1.2 billion in assets.

Mr. Yoshikami, who typically is awake to watch the jobs release at 5:30 a.m. California time, was on "holiday schedule" Friday, but said he saw the report about an hour later.

"This is a number that we watch very closely, and even if we can't trade it immediately, it's a data point that we want to look at to decide where we want to position ourselves," Mr. Yoshikami said. "On a day like today, I can guarantee you that my chief investment officer and all my analysts are looking at the numbers," Mr. Yoshikami said. "We're not just waiting for the markets. Even if this came out on a Saturday, I can assure you we'd be looking at that, too."

But once that work was done, Mr. Yoshikami grabbed his clubs and headed to the golf course.

"Now, I'm just going to have lunch and maybe putt around a little bit," he said.
