Fire Closes Swedish Nuclear Reactor

STOCKHOLM—A nuclear reactor in southern Sweden was shut down after a fire at the plant.

Plant operator OKG's spokesman Anders Ostberg said a fire started in a turbine hall of reactor two around midnight Saturday but was quickly extinguished by local rescue workers.

Mr. Ostberg said Sunday that the blaze appears to have been caused by oil that leaked onto a hot surface. But he said further investigations are needed to determine what caused the oil leak and that it wasn't immediately clear when the nuclear plant would reopen.

OKG operates three nuclear reactors in the town of Oskarshamn in southeast Sweden.

The Nordic country gets nearly half of its electricity from 10 nuclear reactors, and abandoned plans to dismantle them by 2010.

Investors Balking at New Ross Fund

Wilbur Ross Jr. is one of the world's richest and best-known investors on Wall Street. But that hasn't been enough to win over some firms that looked at his latest private-equity fund.

As of August, the 73-year-old Mr. Ross's eponymous firm, WL Ross & Co., had raised a little more than one-tenth of the $4 billion it set out to attract last year. The firm has told people it has cut its fund-raising target to between $2 billion and $2.5 billion, according to people familiar with the conversations.

WL Ross's difficulties reflect the fund-raising challenges facing many private-equity firms as the financial markets seesaw and some investors conclude that they already have enough exposure to buyout shops or distressed strategies in their portfolios. Also, some people who decided against investing in Mr. Ross's latest fund said they also were concerned about succession planning at WL Ross.

Close

ROSS101511jpg

Wilbur Ross Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of WL Ross & Co.

Some would-be investors worried that no one else at the firm, owned by Invesco Ltd., could step in and quickly duplicate Mr. Ross's reputation, connections and investment skill if he decides to become less involved or leaves altogether.

"They have highly talented people at WLR, but we think Wilbur holds it all together," said one investor who passed on the new private-equity fund.

Mr. Ross, a well-known figure on Wall Street since the 1970s, said he isn't going anywhere. In an email to The Wall Street Journal, he wrote: "I recently entered into a new 5 year contract with the firm and continue to play four sets of tennis each weekend."

After five years, the contract automatically extends year to year until he or the firm decides not to lengthen it, Mr. Ross added. Mr. Ross declined to comment on fund-raising efforts.

[ROSS] Bloomberg News

Last year, the firm responded to succession concerns among some investors by changing a provision to give investors more protection if Mr. Ross no longer runs the firm, according to people familiar with the situation. WL Ross originally marketed the fund without naming Mr. Ross as a sole "key man" whose departure alone could lead to a suspension of investments.

Mr. Ross made his reputation as a bankruptcy adviser in the 1970s, managing that practice at Rothschild Inc. until about 2000. He then won new fame and fortune as a private-equity investor through turnarounds of troubled steel and coal companies.

One of Mr. Ross's biggest money makers came from acquiring the bankrupt assets of several U.S. steelmakers to form International Steel Group. The 2005 sale of the steel company to Mittal Steel Group resulted in a 13-fold return on WL Ross's original investment.

Mr. Ross sold WL Ross to Invesco in 2006. A 2007 fund raised about $4 billion from investors, a little more than three times bigger than its 2005 fund.

His firm's funds before the sale to Invesco managed to generate returns more than twice or three times investors' money, according to data from public pension-fund clients. Returns on the 2007 fund, which has a relatively short track record, have been less impressive but in line with some industry peers, according to the data.

Succession planning is particularly important to many private-equity investors because they often make multiyear commitments to a fund. KKR & Co. and Blackstone Group LP, where founders are in their 60s, have management committees packed with top executives of the companies.

At Blackstone, Tony James, president, is expected to eventually succeed 64-year-old founder Stephen Schwarzman as head of the firm, according to one person familiar with the matter.

No one at WL Ross is as closely identified with the private-equity firm as Mr. Ross. But he is surrounded by a team of senior partners who have worked together since Rothschild in the 1990s.

About two years ago, James Lockhart III, who headed the Federal Housing Finance Agency during the U.S. government's seizure of mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, joined Mr. Ross's firm. And it has increased the size of its professional staff to 55 from 35 in the past few years.

Mr. Ross said the entire team works on investment ideas. It is "usually my task to articulate them to our limited partners and other constituents," he wrote in an email to the Journal.

Mr. Ross recently made his fifth business trip to Asia this year, also has been to Europe several times and hopscotched all over the U.S. Meanwhile, his private-equity firm has announced several investments recently. "Does this sound like either I or the firm is pulling back?" he wrote.

WL Ross recently asked investors for nine more months to raise money for its latest private-equity fund, according to a person familiar with the matter. The investors agreed. Since August, the firm has raised more money from some new clients, this person said.

Winless Blueshirts fall for Tavares' trick

So here it is, three games into the season, three winless games into the season and the grand plan already has been altered following a 4-2 Coliseum defeat to the Islanders in which the Rangers established they will continue to lose if they can't find the way to spend less time in the penalty box and more time with the puck at both ends of the ice.

Mats Zuccarello, lost on a mismatched fourth line, is on his way to the AHL Whale after getting 7:55 of ice that included a 24-second shift in the third. Up in his place comes Kris Newbury to add some muscle (or to perhaps sit as a scratch once Wojtek Wolski rejoins the lineup) as the 0-1-2 Blueshirts go west for games in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg before finally getting to the Garden on Oct. 27.

JOHNNY ON THE SHOT: John Tavares smiles as he shoots past a diving Marian Gaborik for an empty-net goal to complete a <a href=hat trick and help the Islanders celebrate (inset) a 4-2 victory over the Rangers last night. " title="JOHNNY ON THE SHOT: John Tavares smiles as he shoots past a diving Marian Gaborik for an empty-net goal to complete a hat trick and help the Islanders celebrate (inset) a 4-2 victory over the Rangers last night. Paul J. Bereswill

JOHNNY ON THE SHOT: John Tavares smiles as he shoots past a diving Marian Gaborik for an empty-net goal to complete a hat trick and help the Islanders celebrate (inset) a 4-2 victory over the Rangers last night.

By then, perhaps the Blueshirts will have found a way to stop the parade to the penalty box that has left the team shorthanded 19 times overall, eight times last night when John Tavares scored a pair of power-play goals before sealing his hat trick and his team's victory with an empty netter.

By then, perhaps the Rangers will have found the way to get to the puck more quickly while being more decisive with it in their own end while controlling play off the forecheck with a down-low ground game that's basically been non-existent through the opening three matches.

"We definitely want to have more control of the puck to make plays with it in our end," said Dan Girardi, who played 26:50 but took an interference penalty at 3:23 of the third for the power play on which Tavares scored what proved to be the winner seven seconds later. "And in their end, we're definitely at our best when we win the puck, hang onto it, and get into a cycle game."

The fact is, the defense appears rather slow-footed and deliberate. Michael Del Zotto, who is neither, is struggling to defend. Fact, too, is that the club hasn't been able to generate a consistent attack where one shift rolls into the next.

It's been hit-or-miss, with most of last night's hits (not in the literal sense) provided by the Derek Stepan-Brad Richards-Marian Gaborik unit. Stepan was on top of the puck throughout playing just his seventh NHL game on the wing. Richards and Gaborik continued to build chemistry, with Gaborik darting into seams, demanding the puck and receiving it.

Indeed, Richards delivered a headman feed to spring Gaborik up the middle for the sniper's breakaway goal at 6:23 of the second for a 1-1 tie. Gaborik, who has scored twice, had eight shots on net, while Richards contributed six and Stepan a pair, the line thus accounting for 16 of the team's 31 tries against Evgeni Nabokov.

Brandon Prust did score a wraparound that made it 2-2 late in the second after Tavares' first power-play goal, but that bit of grinding was more an exception that the rule with the Brandon Dubinsky-Artem Anisimov-Ryan Callahan line struggling to assert itself and Brian Boyle struggling for the third straight game.

"I can't take penalties like that," said Boyle, who closed his hand on the puck while the Rangers already were a man down in the second for a delay of game penalty signifying his fourth minor in three games and who later lost the faceoff preceding Tavares' winner. "I expect more from myself, in every situation.

"It's a little bit frustrating right now."

Imagine how frustrating it is to be Zuccarello.

Salamonie Lake

I'm always drawn to the sight of dead trees in the water like this. I took this shot out the window on the way to Mississinewa 1812.

Salamonie Lake and Salamonie River State Forest comprise a total of 13,336 acres. The property is operated and maintained by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, under a lease agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. At summer pool the water forms a 2,665-acre lake. The property also boasts 60 ponds, marshes, and wetlands. Surrounded by the rich countryside of north central Indiana, Salamonie Lake and the surrounding area have a lot to offer those seeking information on Indiana’s pioneer history. Learn about towns under water, Indiana legends and more.

Ancient Stone Village

photo

Ancient Stone Village

Co Thach is a small seaside village in Tuy Phong, Binh Thuan Province Vietnam, which is approaximately 200 miles North of Ho Chi Minh City.

This area is known for having many interesting rock formations, hence "Co Thach" means "ancient rocks" in Vietnamese. Most unique about many of the beaches there is the gravel stones, covering in thick layers along the beaches.

These stones' shapes and sizes are like the basalt massage stones commonly used in spas.

Blue Grouse Portrait

For Macromavens
365 Caws, Day 358

Hiking in the fresh snow above Paradise today, I ran into a clutch of three Blue Grouse at the top of Alta Vista. Not at all shy around me, I was able to get a number of shots both distant and close up. In fact, they were so busy pecking seeds off the ground that I had to whistle, stamp my feet, cough and make any variety of other noises to get them to look up. This image was taken at 74x zoom (digital) at a distance of approximately ten feet from the bird. It has not been cropped, although I did have to adjust brightness and contrast rather heavily because the mist between us was very dense.

Please stop by my photo blog at

As always, I ask that you please refrain from posting graphics in your comments. Thanks.
