MLB: Avila, Tigers sink Red Sox to 0-3
Alex Avila’s two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Tigers a stunning 13-12 victory over the Red Sox yesterday in Detroit, leaving Boston winless in three games under new manager Bobby Valentine. Detroit trailed 10-7 when Miguel Cabrera tied the game with a three-run shot off Alfredo Aceves in the ninth. Boston then scored twice in the 11th, but Mark Melancon (0-2) couldn’t hold the lead.
* In Arlington, Texas, Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre and David Murphy homered for the Rangers, who wrapped up their season-opening series with a 5-0 victory over the White Sox. ... In Cleveland, Carlos Santana hit two home runs on his 26th birthday, Derek Lowe pitched seven strong innings and the Indians beat the Blue Jays 4-3. ... In Baltimore, Jason Hammel took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in his Baltimore debut, and the Orioles beat the Twins 3-1 for a three-game sweep.
* In Phoenix, Ryan Roberts and Lyle Overbay hit consecutive two-out homers off Matt Cain and the Diamondbacks tied a franchise record by rallying from six runs down to beat the Giants 7-6 for a three-game sweep. ... In Pittsburgh, Andrew McCutchen singled home pinch-runner Josh Harrison with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Pirates past the Phillies 5-4. ... In Milwaukee, Lance Lynn pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning and the Cardinals beat the Brewers 9-3, taking two out of three. ... In Chicago, Jeff Samardzija dominated into the ninth, outpitching Jordan Zimmermann, and the Cubs beat Washington 4-3 for their first win of the Theo Epstein era. ... In Cincinnati, Scott Rolen drove in the winning run in the ninth inning with a sharp infield single that third baseman Hanley Ramirez failed to handle, lifting the Reds to a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Marlins.
NFL: Former QB Kiel dead at 50
Blair Kiel, the former Notre Dame quarterback and punter who played for Tampa Bay, Indianapolis and Green Bay in the NFL, died in Columbus, Ohio. He was 50. Bartholmew County Coroner Allen Smith said Kiel died at Columbus Regional Hospital. Smith said an autopsy has been performed and toxicology results and tissue samples will determine the cause of death. Kiel played for the Irish from 1980-83, completing 297 of 609 passes for 3,650 yards with 17 touchdowns and 32 interceptions. Drafted by Tampa Bay in the 11th round in 1984, Kiel made three starts and appeared in 25 games in five seasons with the Buccaneers, Colts and Packers from 1984 to 1991.
NBA: Celtics slam sinking Sixers
In Boston, Kevin Garnett scored 20 points and Rajon Rondo dished out double-digit assists for his 17th consecutive game, finishing with 15 to help lead the Celtics to a 103-79 win over the struggling 76ers. Boston won for the seventh time in nine games, improving their Atlantic Division lead to three games over both the 76ers and Knicks. The 76ers have dropped 10 of 14, falling out of first in the Atlantic and forced to compete for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
* In San Antonio, Tony Parker scored 28 points and the Spurs won their 11th straight game, beating the Jazz 114-104to maintain their slim lead atop the Western Conference. Manu Ginobili added 23 points for the Spurs. ... In Miami, LeBron James scored 26 points, Chris Bosh finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, and the Heat downed the Pistons 98-75.
TENNIS: Serena wins Family Circle Cup
In Charleston, S.C., Serena Williams capped a dominant week with another powerful performance to beat Lucie Safarova 6-0, 6-1 and capture her first clay-court tournament in four years at the Family Circle Cup. Williams didn't drop a set in five matches this week and lost only three games over the weekend, dispatching Samantha Stosur, 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals before ousting Safarova.
* In Roquebrune, France, John Isner’s big serve and solid forehand proved too strong for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, defeating the Frenchman 6-3, 7-6 (4) 5-7, 6-3 to put the United States into the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time since 2008. In other quarterfinals, host Czech Republic topped Serbia 4-1 and Argentina beat Croatia 4-1. The semifinals are in September.
