The Story
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has been a strange winter with lots of clear skies but strangely, lots of rain too. The storms are coming in fast, dumping a ton of rain and then quickly clearing out before sunrise or sunset. So unfortunately, the light has been rather boring most of the time this winter rainy season in California. I try to 'stock up' on good images that will last me through the dry summer months when the clouds evaporate, but pickings have been slim. March is the end of the rainy season so there is still hope that over the next few weeks, we will have some dramatic skies. There can occasionally be good clouds after that but the odds decrease until November.

Fortunately on this morning, the clouds stuck around for a dramatic sunrise and then were gone about an hour after I saw this view. I live across the bay about 20 miles (30km) away on the left side of this picture behind Angel Island. So I only go here when there is a decent chance of good light.

I chose a short exposure time here because there were these cloloful ripples in the water and no wind to mess them up. This place has great long-exposure potential as you may have see in other views from here. And I used a wide angle to take in as much as I could. It was so dramatic and the weather was mild and humid. I almost forgot to take the shot!

The map shows the exact location.

My pictures are featured on the front page of the
state Government. of California website and the new Governor, Jerry Brown's website too. Have a look! It is Flash with my pics cut into layers for a 3-d slideshow. If you are into building apps, the State has opened up lots of data to the public, so check it out!

Simply the best way to scout out locations that there is. You can see sun angles and pre-visualize light under lots of different conditions. Sometimes you can actually pre-compose your shots! This has saved me many thousands of vertical feet of climbing by avoiding spots with blocked views etc.

Satellite imagery (choose 'National' for a local US region or use your fave website)
